From humble beginnings to advanced manufacturing: 30 years of Production Logix

For 30 years, Production Logix has been building South African manufacturing capability — growing from humble beginnings in a small Durban garage into one of the country’s leading Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) providers.

The business began by manufacturing simple wire and harness looms for safety deposit boxes. As electronics became increasingly sophisticated, Production Logix evolved with the market, expanding into PCB (printed circuit board) assembly, complex wiring and harnessing, box-build and electronic product assembly for the vehicle tracking industry.

A significant milestone in the company’s journey was becoming a strategic manufacturing supplier to Reutech Communications and, later, the broader Reunert Group, supporting its objective of partnering with Level 1 suppliers. This relationship accelerated Production Logix’s development into a specialist manufacturer of complex defence and aerospace electronic products, where quality, traceability, configuration control and manufacturing discipline are fundamental.

Today, Production Logix is the largest EMS provider in KwaZulu-Natal, operating from a 4 000m² manufacturing facility in Durban. But its reach now extends well beyond its home province. The company has developed a strong national footprint, servicing customers across Gauteng, the Western Cape and the rest of South Africa, demonstrating that world-class electronics manufacturing capability does not need to be geographically limited to South Africa’s traditional industrial centres.

For customers selecting an EMS partner, geography should not be the defining consideration. Capability, quality, responsiveness and the ability to deliver should be. Production Logix has successfully built a model that enables it to support customers nationally while retaining the flexibility, accessibility and close customer relationships on which the business was founded.

Central to the Production Logix approach is partnership. The team works closely with each customer to understand their specific build requirements and develop flexible, tailor-made manufacturing solutions around them. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, Production Logix adapts its processes, production methods and supply-chain solutions to meet the unique technical, commercial and programme requirements of each customer.

Its capabilities extend across SMT and through-hole PCB assembly, cable and harness manufacture, electromechanical assembly, testing, inspection, full turnkey procurement and supply-chain management.

Remaining competitive in electronics manufacturing also requires constant evolution. Production Logix continues to invest in advanced manufacturing equipment, processes and technology, keeping abreast of developments within the global electronics industry and ensuring that its manufacturing capability evolves alongside the increasingly sophisticated products its customers require.

Underpinning this technology is a trusted and loyal team, many of whom have grown alongside the business over many years. Its operators and technical personnel possess a wealth of institutional knowledge, practical expertise and specialist manufacturing know-how developed over decades. This depth of experience is invaluable when manufacturing complex, highly specialised assemblies where consistency, workmanship and attention to detail are critical.

The company operates within a highly controlled quality environment, including AS9100 and ISO 9001, supported by Institute for Printed Circuits (IPC) trained personnel and an experienced manufacturing and engineering team. This enables Production Logix to support customers operating in sectors where reliability, quality and repeatability are non-negotiable.

Three decades later, the principle behind the business remains remarkably similar to where it started: build it well, build it locally and earn the trust of the customer.

As South Africa looks to strengthen its sovereign manufacturing and defence-industrial capability, Production Logix is proud to be part of that ecosystem — investing in local skills, advanced manufacturing technology and the capability to manufacture increasingly complex electronic products here at home.
